Nuclear volume isotope fractionation of europium and other lanthanide elements

The nuclear volume component of equilibrium field shift isotope fractionations in europium and other lanthanide elements is estimated using Mössbauer spectroscopy electronic structure calculations. This effect goes the opposite direction from mass-dependent fractionation, case predicted to dominate over mass dependent fractionation for most materials. Including both effects, Eu2+-bearing species will have approximately 0.4-1‰ higher 153Eu/151Eu than Eu3+-bearing at 25ºC (298 K), about 0.3‰ 700ºC (973 K). Field mainly depends on oxidation state; differences coordination without changes state appear much weaker associated fractionations. Nuclear become even more dominant temperatures because effects scale with 1/T (K), vs. 1/T2 fractionation. Fractionation favoring high minerals that preferentially incorporate Eu2+, such as plagioclase, consistent recent measurements igneous rocks showing low samples large negative anomalies (Lee Tanaka, 2021). present results agree conclusion cannot explain cosmochemical REE primitive meteoritical materials (Hu et al., 2021), net too small (~0.2‰ or less) >1200 K where vapor-phase are relevant.
